Hayfever, Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is characterised by nasal congestion, runny nose,
sneezing, watering and itching eyes, itchy throat and roof of
mouth. In 20% of cases there is also asthma.
It is due to an antigen-antibody reaction in the nasal mucosa. If the
antigens are pollen particles then it is called seasonal allergic rhinitis
(hayfever). If the antigens are dust, house mites’ faecal matter, fungal
spores or animal dander it is called perennial allergic rhinitis.
When the nasal mucosa become swollen it may obstruct drainage
from the sinuses causing sinusitis.
The Western treatment of allergic rhinitis relies mostly on the use of
antihistamine agents. Side-effects can include sedation,
dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness and gastro-intestinal
disturbances.
The Chinese medicine treatment focuses on strengthening the body’s
defences against allergens as well as alleviating symptoms of an
acute attack. Treatment to strengthen defences can be given at any
time in the year, is usually very effective and can have a long term
effect.
